Command AC

The wheel sockets were painted in the base green of the camouflage scheme, as well as the wheels. Then the wheels were glued in place and the rest of the vehicle basecoated in green. Gluing the wheels in first would have made painting the recessed parts quite a hassle.

Gunship

The gunship had a mishap when preparing it for the base coat, and lost one of it's cannon barrels. I was not able to fix that. So I removed the other one as well, and made two new barrels to replace the old ones from brass tubing. While doing that, I thought such a barrel would also make a good impression as the chin turret gun, and placed a third one there. This also distinguishes the chin gun of the gunship and the utility VTOLs.

I then also painted the model in the dark green camouflage base colour.

Utility VTOLs

I first painted the roof of the cabin in the same khaki grey base, bone white drybrush as the interiors.

When I glued the cabins in place, I became aware of a design flaw I built into them: There is no distinct line, where the interior and exterior roof meet. So I cut some 1mm strips of card to glue in place, but the card warped when cut, so I need to do these from plastic card.

The VTOLs where then also painted in the base green.

The Marines are done. The guy with the first aid case will be part of the command group, the casualty with the bleeding arm and the guy with the ammo case will bring the second squad to full strength. The two SAW gunners will go to the pool of support weapons.

Time to close this project. I started by painting the interior of the cabins.

Today I primed the cabin insides in 73.601 Grey Surface Primer through my airbrush. When the inside is painted, I will seal the openings with tape and glue the cabins to the hulls - the outside will then be painted with the rest of the VTOLs.

Tobias printed the cabins. Thanks!

Thanks to Tobias I have my prototpye. It fits well onto he model :-)

With the basic form confirmed, I added some more details. On the front wall I added a bench with 5 seats. This will be quite cramped, but this is a military vehicle after all and no luxury plane.

On the rear side I added a seat for the gunner, and two racks with spare ammo drums for the machine gun.

This is the final version now that I will use with the landers.

Finally some progress. I roughly recreated the machine gun from Brigade Models in OpenSCAD, and added in the rear wall an opening for the gunner. The machine gun will be mounted on the contraption I added there.

Time for a test print.

Having seen a news item on The Miniatures Page, I thought these would fit perfectly well for the door gunners of my VTOLs. So I ordered the gatlings and machine guns from Brigade Models:

Now I need to recreate them as 3 models in OpenSCAD and play around with them on my cabin model.

The landing gear is done, extended to allow ground contact even with a passenger cabin attached. In the pictures you can see the Green Stuff I used to fix the wood sticks in place and give a base on which I added Miliput after it dried to sculpted the final form. Still needs sanding.

This project is now on hold until I finished the design of the cabin and have it 3d printed.

The decision concerning the armament of the Raven has been taken - I just used all the available weaponry :-)

For the lander, I built a very clever and sophisticated contraption to get all the sides equal. I then cut from tooth picks the extensions, inserted into small holes I drilled.

Concerning the cabin, I started to design my own in OpenSCAD, I am not very far until now:

I am toying with the idea of doing side doors instead of rear doors, but let's see how this turns out.

What also irritates me with the landers is the chin gun, which has one relatively big barrel. With the gunship, I see it as a grenade launcher or small howitzer. That VTOL has reapid firing weapons mounted on the side sponsons. But for the landers, having only the chin guns, I wanted some kind of gatling, chain gun, whatever. So I also designed one. Let's see how this will print, especially with the ring near the front I am not sure as it is not supported from underneath, so probably the printer will have a problem with that.
