A gaming board in a weekend¶

I painted these models quite some time ago, but so far never used them in a game.

Now a new colleague who learnt about my hobby asked for a game during lunch break, so I thought again of these small models, which would need a smaller game board.

Only problem: I neither have a board nor any terrain...

The above models I painted according to the scenario description of Ork Hill. So it will be this scenario I have time to build terrain for this weekend... You grow with your challenges...

Here you can see my interpretation of the terrain description from the scenario:

So I need two hills, four buildings and the board. The woods will be brown felt areas with aquarium plants I already have (probably too large, but ready) and for the river/marsh I will use blue felt. So I hope the building and painting can be accomplished this weekend.

First, the board. It is 50751.2cm MDF. It got coated with PVA and sprinkled with bird cage sand. I then painted it in orange brown.

The buildings I designed on the computer, printed them and glued the prints to corrugated card board. I the cut the windows before cutting the walls. For gluing, I used Lego blocks to get nice 90° corners. There is a floor, inner walls that close the windows from the inside and serve as pillars for the roof and finally the roof. As I don't like 'unlogical' terrain, I needed an access to the roof. So I cut squares from card board, cut away the edges and glued them onto the roof as hatches. When dry, I covered the buildings in ready made wall spackle.

Free Trader Crew¶

The models are done, all bases finished.

Free Trader Crew¶

The rest of the crew (Engineer, Ambassador, Preacher, Doctor and Teenage Girl) is done. Only the bases on all of them are missing the finishing touches.

Free Trader Crew¶

And the Security Specialist is done also. Six indicidual models in a day, not bad. My painting hobby definitely needs more bank holidays...

Free Trader Crew¶

The First Mate is done. Again, I painted both versions in different clothing.

The Captain is done. I gave him two different dresses instead of painting both models the same way.

Free Trader Crew¶

I continued work on the Free Trader Crew. First up is the Pilot, who also drives the mule to get cargo to and from the ship.

I wanted to paint the model on foot at the same time as the seated model. When I had both besides each other I noticed, that in my first attempt to give the seated drived the head of the Pilot, I grabbed one of the Security Specialist models... :-(

Out came the knife, off went the head and I instant moulded the correct head.

I then tried to sculpt the shirt of the original model on the seated driver.

Then came the painting. Orange suit and hawaian shirt.

After some colourful splotches, I tried to paint on some flower shapes in dark green - according to my wife I managed to archive the look of a childs painting attempts, but not a hawaian shirt look...

Here is the complete vehicle with driver seated and standing. The great panel on the front cries out for the Free Trader Crew logo - another decal I need to design and have custom printed.

Armed Civilians¶

The armed civilians are done, ready painted and based. I quite like the mixed up look of the bunch:

Armed Civilians¶

The miniatures are done, all the detail is painted.

Bases still pending.

The clothes on all the models are done. I tried to aim for a brownish cowboy look on some, while trying to get a real colourful look on others to have a nice non-uniform look to the bunch.
