I painted the shields in unit colours, leaving the bare plaster for the white parts. Both sides of the shields where then covered in PVA glue, as I am not sure how the wash will react with the bare material.

All the bases are basecoated. I hate painting sand... so many undercuts...

As requested, here are some comparison pictures with older Citadel miniatures and with Mirliton.

I smoothed out the ground around the integral bases of the models, then glued sand and small pebbles on top.

It is about time I get these models off the to do list, they are pending for long enough.

I applied an oil wash using Winsor & Newton lamp black and Sansodor to all the models. When this is dry, I will go over them with Sansodor again, where the miniatures are too dark. Then I can start finishing the bases.

I started to look into the banners I will have the two banner bearers carrying. After some Google search for Viking banners, I quickly found Odin's Raven as a symbol I liked quite well. Using the image from the Wikipedia page as a basis, I came up with the two following designs:

The larger one will be for the main unit, the smaller one for the detachment.

Colourwise I am not quite sure yet. I think the inner colour will be white, what is now black I envisage in a deep red... but this remains to be seen.

Nadir Steppe Riders¶

I used Instant Mould, to make a form of a horse tail, to replace the missing one. The actual cast was done with miliput pressed into both halves, with one half filled over the brim. In the other I put a piece of wire, to be used as a pin when gluing the tail to the horse.

Next I applied some plaster to the bases to smooth out the integral bases of the horses and not have them sitting on a small hill. I added some larger stones to the plaster. Afterwards, the bases where covered in PVA glue and sanded.

There are two riders with open hands, from brass rod I cut one banner pile and one spear.

As the Nordmen are nearing their completion, I started to prepare the next batch of models. The Oldworlder Ally Contingent allows for 0-30 Border Horse, with a unit minimum of 10. They come equipped with Light armour and hand weapon, with the option for spears, shields and/or bows.

Tobias' Wargaming Legacy contains 15 rider models, which I choose to use for this unit. They consist of 11 Steve Barber Mongols (apparently not available any longer), and Harlequin Miniatures' (today called Black Tree Design babarian cavalry.

I will mount the miniatures on metal bases from Products for Wargamers.

I cleaned the riders of flash, and started on the horses (and the one camel). The cleaned animals were then glued to the base. One of the Harlequin models is missing its tail, which I will try to recast from one of the other horses.

I started to carve away the excess plaster of the casts, a bit above half the shields are done. On some, the rim broke away, so I will probably need to cast some more.

I cleaned the last 10 models for the unit, glued them to their bases and glued sand around their feet.

One model's axe I cut away, and drilled a hole for a piece of brass rod. This one will be the banner bearer for the smaller detachment.

I then basecoated them with 74.602 Black Surface Primer through my airbrush.
