I painted all the bases in the usual brown of my base style, paying extra attention to not get paint on the boots or the uniform of kneeling/prone models.

I settled for 70.892 Yellow Olive for the support weapons, grenades, binoculars, etc.

The skin was painted 70.815 Basic Skintone.

All weapons except the support weapons are painted:

  • Weapon Metal
    • 70.863 Gunmetal Grey

      &

      70.995 German Grey
  • Weapon Wood
    • 70.826 German Camo Medium Brown

The support weapons (PIATs and mortars) as well as all the equipment like grenades, binoculars, radios etc. will be painted green. Searching for the right shade of green I camo across a multitude of descriptions, the colour also seems to has changed during the War. Adding to that the usual wear and tear, bleaching from the sun, field repairs with non-regulation paint etc., I figured any deepish-olivish-greenish shade will do.

I painted 4 testmodels, probably I will take on of the two shades of green on the right.

Some progress on the Brits. I painted all helmets in 70.924 Russian Uniform, the field flasks in 70.846 Mahagony Sand and am now in the process of painting 70.988 Khaki on the anklets, all the webbing, the backpacks, the camouflage strips on the helmets... this takes forever, but after this step the most difficult and time consuming parts will be done.

In the picture below, the models in the right lower corner are still to be done in Khaki.

With the Wehrmacht done, I started to work on the British troops. First, I painted the boots on all miniatures black. Next, I highlighted the uniforms with 'British Uniform'. This is the same colour I airbrushed over the black basecoat, but brushed on it is much more intensive. On the below picture, the left model is the highlighted one, the right a model with only the brown airbrushed on.

The following is my test model, with all the different colours painted, but no highlights yet except for the uniform as described above. I am happy with the colour selection, and will proceed like this with all the models.

The British got completely based, basecoated in "VA74602 Vallejo Primer Black Acrylic-Polyurethane" with my Airbrush, and then sprayed from slightly above angles to create the first shading with 70.921 English Uniform from Vallejo.

After life was quite busy the last days, I found some more time to continue work on miniatures. I started to work on the missing bren gunners, when I noticed something strange about the base size of the British models I did so far:

I chose the wrong size of wahsers... facepalm

So before removing the flash from the new minitaures, I first debased the old ones. Here you can see them glued to the intended size of washer next to my mountain of stupidity...

Here you can see the models including the 8 new ones organized into squads.

The British are ready based. Had I paid more attention to the pictures of the Bren pack composition, I would have noticed that you only get three Brens per pack, the rest being ammo carriers/loaders... Therefore I am now some Brens short and have to many rifle men... this are the empty washers in the picture. Measures have already been taken to remedy this situation.

When I placed my order for South of Cherbourg, I also had a look at the Peter Pig buildings, but decided to first look around, as there must be a lot of suppliers for those. After some googleing, I didn't find many I liked, so another order with Peter Pig was needed. Along with the buildings, I also gave their hedges, low walls and hay stacks a go.

To enliven my terrain I added some sheep, pigs and dead cows - well, the latter ones don't actually enliven the terrain... Also, some street signs, furniture, petrol station pieces and an urinal was added to the order.

The models I ordered before (US Army and Wehrmacht) are for the second scenario from the rulebook. So I thought, the Lardies certainly had their reason for putting scenario one first... and I would not need anymore Germans, all covered already by the second scenario. Just some British soldiers...

Again, only one week from ordering to delivery, great service!
